BTS’s RM opened up about his love of art at a media preview for ‘RM x SFMOMA: Between You and Me’ at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on September 29. RM co-curated the exhibition, which opens to the public on October 3.
The show runs through February 7, 2027, and brings together works from RM’s personal collection alongside pieces from SFMOMA’s own holdings. It is the first museum exhibition built around his collection, spanning paintings, drawings, sculptures, ceramics, textiles, and design works.
RM said his interest in collecting began about eight years ago, when he started visiting museums on a regular basis. The project itself took shape during his military service two years ago, when SFMOMA approached him with the proposal. He recalled accepting right away, joking that any offer from San Francisco at the time was impossible to turn down.
He described art as an emotional anchor for moments when he feels adrift, whether he is in the United States or in Seoul. While music and visual art use different mediums, he said both share the same purpose of telling stories and expressing emotions.
RM also spoke candidly about his mixed feelings toward collecting, admitting he had wondered whether owning so many works might make him look like a wealthy person hoarding possessions. Even so, he said he wanted to share the collection so that others could experience the works for themselves.
On the theme of the exhibition, RM pointed to the balance between the personal and the universal, East and West, and the dialogue between modern and contemporary art. Visitors will also be able to follow his reflections through handwritten wall texts and a narrated audio guide.
